Natural protection for the vegetable garden: organic plant strengtheners and products for non-professional use

A healthy vegetable patch is first and foremost defended with strong plants: crop rotation, watering at the base, soil rich in organic matter. When you need a little extra help, you can choose between two families of products.

1. Biostimulants: they strengthen the plant

These are substances of natural origin that increase the resistance of plants to stress and adversity and are permitted in organic farming. They work best in prevention, with regular treatments:

• Soft soap: cleans the leaves of honeydew and residues.
• Propolis: strengthens the plant tissues.
• Neem oil: a widely used supplement to strengthen and protect the leaves.
• Horsetail extract: rich in silica, it strengthens the tissues.
• Sodium hydrogen carbonate and Lectin 80: biostimulants traditionally used in prevention during wet periods.

2. PFnPE: when you need a real treatment

Plant protection products for non-professional use (PFnPE abbreviation on the label) are formulated for hobbyists: small, ready-to-use packages or easy to dose. They do not require a license and can be used in the vegetable patch, orchard, and home garden. Rules to always follow

• Use the product only on the crops and against the adversities indicated on the label, at the indicated dose.
• Respect the withdrawal period: the days that must pass between the last treatment and harvest.
• Do not treat during flowering to protect bees and do not treat in windy conditions or when rain is approaching.
• Wear gloves and keep the products closed, away from children and food.
