Scissors, loppers, or a saw? How to choose the right tool for pruning

Potatura con forbice

Using the wrong tool damages both the plant and the blade. The simplest rule: choose based on the thickness of the branch.

Up to 2 cm: secateurs

  • Bypass cut (two blades that slide past each other like scissors): a clean cut, ideal for green branches, roses, and shrubs. See, for example, the Bypass Garden Secateurs 19.5 - Stocker or the Bahco Ergo.
  • Anvil cut (one blade resting on a flat base): more power for dry, hard wood. For cutting with less effort, there are also the Ratchet Secateurs 18 - Stocker, which multiply the power of your hand.

From 2 to 4-5 cm: loppers

Long handles provide leverage and reach inner branches: the Hobby Loppers 65 Bypass - Stocker for green wood, the Hobby Loppers 66 Amboss - Stocker (anvil cut) for dry wood, or telescopic models such as the Telescopic Ratchet Loppers - Stocker 75-100 cm.

Over 4-5 cm: a saw

A hand saw such as the Maestral Saw 250 - Stocker, or curved models like the Falco Saw 430 TC - Stocker and the Corvo Saw 430 TC - Stocker, cut without tearing the wood fibers. For high branches, there is the Magma telescopic chainsaw.

When battery-powered secateurs are the best choice

If you are pruning a vineyard, orchard, or long hedges, electric secateurs such as the Vulcano E-25 TR Secateurs - Stocker or the Kantia E-22 TR Secateurs - Stocker reduce fatigue and wrist pain.

Maintenance: clean blades, healthy cuts

Protect your hands

For safe pruning, use Cut-Resistant Gloves - Stocker, or the winter version.
