The most at-risk plants
Citrus trees, bougainvillea, geraniums, succulents, and all young or newly transplanted plants. Potted plants suffer more than those planted in the ground because their roots are less protected.
1. Cover with non-woven fabric
The Protex non-woven fabric sheet lets light and air through while retaining heat. Wrap the foliage on cold nights without tying it too tightly, and uncover it on mild days to prevent mold. Never use plastic in direct contact with the leaves.
2. Move and elevate the pots
- Move the pots close to a south-facing wall, sheltered from the wind.
- Lift them off the ground using feet or Roll pot feet, which also make them easy to move.
- Empty the saucers: standing water that freezes damages the roots.
3. Prepare the plant from within
In autumn, stop using nitrogen-rich fertilizers, which stimulate tender shoots that are sensitive to frost. A biostimulant such as Algatron - Cifo 500 ml helps the plant cope with stress.
4. Water less, but don't forget them
In winter, plants drink little, but completely dry soil makes them more vulnerable. Water during the middle of mild days with lukewarm water, using a watering can.
5. Lawns and irrigation systems
Do not walk on frost-covered lawns, and empty hoses and irrigation controllers before the first frost.
