DICONDRA, belonging to the Convolvulaceae family, is the trade name Bottos gives to the plant Dichondra repens, also known as Dichondra micrantha. It is a perennial evergreen plant, native to New Zealand and Australia, herbaceous, equipped with an underground stem (rhizome) that produces new aerial stems and roots every year. It serves as a ground cover as an alternative to the classic grass lawn. Its flowers are white or green, very small in size, and are often barely noticeable among the leaves. The flowering period is from June to September. Among the advantages of DICONDRA is its dwarf and creeping habit, which drastically reduces the number of cuts, practically eliminating them; it rarely exceeds 3-5 cm in height. Water requirements are low, its spread is very important (strong colonization of spaces), and it shows high adaptability to both full sun and partial shade-shade conditions. It has poor resistance to trampling; therefore, it should be avoided in areas subject to frequent passage or in play areas. It is sensitive to winter cold: generally, at temperatures below 4°C, the green part withers, although the plant regrows in the following spring. In areas with prolonged frosts, the plant is essentially annual and must be reseeded in spring.
It is recommended to sow on perfectly level and soft soil to facilitate root emission; the sowing is superficial, ensuring the seed adheres well to the growing medium. DICONDRA normally needs about twenty days to establish, during which time the soil must be kept moist, but without waterlogging. As it is a dicotyledon, during the initial phase of turf formation, it is necessary to carefully check that weeds do not grow, which, once sprouted, must be meticulously removed by hand, as chemical weeding (with authorized products) is not possible at this stage. The seed is always coated to improve DICONDRA's germination and facilitate all sowing operations.

Main Benefits

  • Climate Resilience: Survives temperatures down to -3°C, ideal for warm-temperate climates.
  • Self-Regenerating Growth: Regrows luxuriously every spring, requiring minimal maintenance.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Seeds free from chemical treatments, for a natural and healthy lawn.
  • Density and Coverage: High soil coverage capacity, for a uniform lawn without gaps.
  • Ease of Sowing: Semi-coated seed for optimal distribution and uniform growth.

Maintenance Tips

  • Ideal Soil: Prefers loose, warm, soft, well-drained soils with a pH tending towards neutral.
  • Optimal Sowing: From April to early June, in soils with temperatures above 12-15°C for ideal germination.
  • Recommended Dosage: 10-15 g/m², increasing up to 18 g/m² on sloping or less fertile soils.
  • Mowing: Reduced to 2-3 times a year, the first cut is recommended in mid-June for a uniform lawn.
  • Irrigation: Regular during germination and in hot periods to maintain optimal moisture.
